With its long, vibrant history black pepper is one of worlds most important spices and has been traded for over 3500 years. For many centuries it was considered a highly valued product giving it the nickname ”Black gold” as it was accepted as a currency.
It grows on evergreen vines climbing as high as its trellis will allow it producing a cluster of small white flowers after 3 years. The flower has 20 to 30 fruiting spikes that after around 9 months create small green berries that are picked, washed and dried.
Sri Lankan black pepper is renowned for its heat and pungency due to the high amount of piperine. Our Kandian Black Pepper has a floral aroma with wild, earthy flavor because of its cultivation together with an array of other trees growing semi wild in the jungle around Wepathana.
