Maqaw, also known as Mountain Pepper, has an incredible lemony fragrance with a mix of lemongrass and lemon flavors with herbal and gingery undertones. The small pepper-like fruits grow on evergreen trees in the Lauraceae family and are native to Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
We really enjoy cooking with this spice as it really enhances the flavor of lemon with its own unique undertone. We have used it with lemon pasta, in grilled zucchini salads and BBQ chicken.
Our Maqaw is picked by the Da Bac Cooperative from the mountains of Hoa Binh. We source this spice together with Doi Spices who work closely with local farmers in Vietnam generating new livelihoods and markets for these communities.
