A small red fruit that is sun dried and used as a spice in Nothern Vietnam. It has a sour, sweet berry taste. Can be made into powder and used like sumac or soaked in water and then grounded into a paste and be used like tamarind paste.
We have been peeling of skin and discarded the seeds before using them. We don’t know if this is necessary but the seeds really don’t add anything. We think that it would be very nice to make kombucha or some kind of syrup from these dried fruits.
Other than that we do not know so much about this spice.
Our MacMat is picked by the Nguyen Ba Huy living in Lang Son, Northern Vietnam. We source this spice together with Doi Spices who work closely with local farmers in Vietnam generating new livelihoods and markets for these communities.
