As their name suggests, these chilis grow upwards, pointing towards the sky, which is relatively unique among chili plants. Facing heaven chilis are valued for their unique growth habit, appealing level of heat, and the depth of flavor they bring to dishes, making them a favored ingredient in the rich tapestry of Chinese and specifically Sichuan cooking
Although similar to the Facing Heaven Chili – Chao Tian Jiao – they do vary in both appearance, aroma and flavor. Both of the chilies grow upward toward the sky therefore both are facing the heavens. Whereas Chao Tian Jiao is longer, slimmer and more meaty, Zi Dan Tou is smaller and has s shape more like an arrow head. They both boasts an interesting aroma but here the Zi Dan Tou is more round and less acidic.
Zi Dan Tou also has more smokey flavor and more berrylike tones.
